Electroless nickel plating can give high corrosion resistance, high hardness, high wear resistance, solderability by incorporating phosphorus or boron into the plating film.
Electroless nickel plating is classified into two types of electroless nickel – phosphorus plating and electroless nickel – boron plating. Electroless nickel – phosphorus plating is classified into three types, of low phosphorus, medium phosphorus, high phosphorus. And each ones characteristic is different.

Improvement of corrosion resistance
Electroless nickel – phosphorus plating can improve the corrosion resistance by incorporating phosphorus into the plating film, and becoming an amorphous structure. It is ideal for improving the corrosion resistance of the steel and aluminum material. It is expected to be applied to such as shaft and piston etc. As a result, it is possible to improve the wear resistance.
Improvement of hardness and wear resistance
Electroless nickel plating is able to confer a hardness of about 500Hv. Further, crystallization will proceed by a heat treatment of 300 ~ 400 ℃, hardness is possible to raise up to about 1000Hv.
Application of solderability
Electroless nickel plating is able to confer solderability. A type of low phosphorus electroless nickel–phosphorus plating that a passive film is not easily formed and an electroless nickel–boron plating has excellent solderability.
